Maine sunset

So much to do, so little time!

Acadia National Park is the reason many people come to our island, and with good reason—hiking trails, carriage roads for biking or walking, interpretive centers, guided walks with a naturalist, dark star-studded skies, and horse drawn carriage rides. The Beaver Log has an updated schedule of park activities.

Go Afloat.
Don’t miss the chance to get out on the water. Mount Desert Island has water activities for the daring and the languid. Kayak rentals, charter sailboats, whale watch cruises, a working lobster boat, fishing boat charters, dive-in underwater theater boat rides, and sunset cruises on a tall ship. Want to venture out on your own? National Park Canoe & Kayak Rental will deliver boats right to the property and pick them up after your adventure.

Educate (the fun way).
Have you ever felt a starfish walk across your hand? There are touch tanks at the Mount Desert Oceanarium and College of the Atlantic’s Dorr Museum of Natural History. Learn about the Wabanaki Nation at the Abbe Museum. Try bird carving at the Wendell Gilley Museum, or learn to identify the amazing colors and textures of Maine’s granite at the Maine Granite Industry Museum.

Boutique gift shops, Maine-made crafts, art galleries, fine locally crafted home accessories, farmstands, jewelers, antiques—the island boasts a plethora of talented creatives and artisanal goods.

Picnic in the park, have lobsters at a seaside lobster pound, or head to one of the island’s many family or fine dining restaurants. In addition to lobsters, Maine is noted for excellent goat cheeses, sweet Maine shrimp, fiddleheads, maple syrup and award-winning microbrews.
